Le Premier Mai

Just reading Wilf's blog reminded me of the French tradition of exchanging lily of the valley -- muguet -- on May 1st to celebrate spring and to share good fortune. And then it reminded me of a song Rosemary Clooney as well as Mabel Mercer used to sing:

"On the first warm day,

On the first warm day in May,

I hope you come a calling,

And bring me a big bouquet..."

A day to enjoy, yes, -- but we're keeping a huge place in our hearts for those who have suffered so badly in the path of those fierce tornados.

Muzzer is really old, ya know? She remembers making may baskets and leaving them at the neighboring houses on her way to school.

Her memory is not so good, ya know? But she claims that two years out of three, it was pouring down rain.

So we are sending you a virtual may basket, and hoping none of us get wet.

When I lived in the suburbs of Toronto we had Lily of the Valley growing alongside of the house and I loved them so. Thanks for bringing back a wonderful memory - I still remember their sweet scent. Ann

Dog Dad remembers Lilly of the Valley in his parent yard. He thinks of spring. Then he thinks of baseball, and we are getting the fever.

Pretty flowers. We could do with a bouquet here, as my gardener is a bit useless....(and she has the cheek to blame me for digging things up, as if she ever plants things in the first place).
