As some of you know, one of my tasks in this household is to report on extreme weather phenomena, particularly those events occurring between June 1 and November 30, a six-month period known as "the hurricane season."
Today, I can happily report that this year's season was officially OVER yesterday. And though other parts of the country and the region did not escape the ravages of storms such as Faye, Gustav, and Ike, we here in South Florida were comparatively fortunate as storms that looked like they might hit us decided not to.
Huge sighs of relief all around -- but lots of lingering compassion for those in places like Galveston and elsewhere on the Gulf Coast as well as in the Caribbean that were not so lucky.
On another topic, I can report that our Thanksgiving was swell. Although we didn't get as many treats as we were hoping, we did get to enjoy the pre-party fun outside. And, when everyone moved inside for dinner, they treated us like stars and I even had a few moments at the table. On Friday morning, my bowls were restored to their proper location, as promised, accompanied by effusive apologies from the human-in-charge.
I can also report that, on Saturday, Mom and Dogdad visited Madison's (see with love, Madison) humans at their art gallery in downtown Fort Lauderdale and discussed a play date for us sometime after the holidays.
And finally, yesterday, Just Harry and I went on a practice road trip to visit Mom's aunt in Boca Raton -- a 25-mile trip -- and the humans were very very impressed with how good we were in the car and at her apartment. It was a tiring experience, as you can see what happened when we got back -- but we had a great time, with lots of pets and even a few treats!! And, the most important part, Mom and Dogdad were reassured that we do well on a longer car ride and can be trusted in someone else's home.

We are so very glad that Florida's hurricane season is over - for you and for our gram and gramp, who stress about these nasty events too! Gram and gramp are in Vero Beach!
Love ya lots,
Maggie and Mitch
We are also glad hurricane season is over. It was our first and it was quite stressful.
Also, human-in-charge? What kind of house are you guys in? Around these parts, I call the shots... except when she puts me in my crate... or on a leash... Hrm. Maybe not.

I just looked at your TG pics, wow, did the whole US army come over? Looked like enough food for 300 hungry people! Loved the menu card, your mom is very clever!
Glad you survived the trek to Boca. My mom once lived there...you are lucky you have nice weather, we are freezing our butts off in Philly.

Sounds like you guys had a great THX, we hope the hoomans enjoyed it too!
If you are planning a road trip of any length, you might want to invest in a large rawhide or bully stick. They are great in the back seat. Also, books on tape with your own headsets.

Well said on the end of the season and compassion for those who were less fortunate this year. I wonder when our luck in SoFla will run out but I hope it is a longgg time from now! Hope Jake enjoys the off season and has a less buzy 2009 season!
That's great hurricane season is OVER! No more worrying for now...*grins*

You look so erudite and at home at the laptop in that first photo. You're a regular meteorolodog!
I can't believe your peeps met Madison and her peeps. She is a cute giant (Schnauzer) and I bet you'll have a blast with her whenever you all get together. Be sure to take lots of photos!
You and JH will be traveling pros by the time your St Louis trip rolls around. Like I said, depending on when it is, maybe I could borrow the hoogirl's car and head down I-70 to visit you guys.
Glad you're out of a job for awhile. Hurrican season is too long as it is.
Goober love,
Stanley
We love that top photo too!!! Can't wait for your roadtrip!

Dear Jake and JH and your pawrents
We're very pleased to hear that the hurricane season is over for you. The weather can certainly be vicious and cause a lot of heartache. We're going through our storm season now and our particular area has been hit very hard. The shed even flooded and this has never happened in the 12 years mum has been living here. We've lost power several times, once for almost 24 hours, but others suffered much worse than us. At least our little house was not destroyed.
I'm sorry I haven't been visiting but mum hasn't had time for me to blog. 2008 has definitely not been a good year for us in any way. What doesn't help either is our internet connection. We live in a mountainous area where even the mobile phone coverage is not good. This is a negative, but the positive is that we live in a quiet, pretty spot. There are always contrasts in everything in life. Mum wishes we could all be happy all the time but if life was meant to be like this, we'd only have one season.
We are extremely grateful to you, particularly our mum, for keeping Beau's mission button displayed on your blog. Hopefully one day someone in Australia who knows something about Beau will notice this button on your blog. Mum is never going to stop searching for Beau for the duration of his natural life. Most hoomans have a compooter now so those of our mates who are displaying Beau on their blogs are really helping us a great deal.
Please take good care of yourselves until I can blog again in 2009. Please give your pawrents lots of hugs and licks from my family and me.
Love from Hammer
Smart boyz. Course you can be good in the car.As if you wouldn't be. Did you play I-spy? Sorry you lost your job Jake pawhaps Harry could be your PA next year?
Wiry wags, Eric xxxx
An excellent season of being a weatherdog, Jake! Congratulations and thanks!
That's great about the car...maybe you will get to go on a lot of adventures!
Your friend, Lenny
That's a relief! Hurricanes stress me out even though I live in Colorado! I worry about all my friends and family that live where hurricanes hit.
Glad your Thanksgiving was good. I'm still recovering from our guests.

Yes, no more hurricanes this season, but what's with the COLD? I am shivering at the gallery and we actually ordered Madison a SWEATER! The teen-human found a very sporty red knit that should look very stylish for our Las Olas walks. Come visit again - it was so cool to meet you in person! (That will make all our fellow bloggers jealous, lol ... next time we have to include the DOGS!)
You need a long nap after all those goings on.
Of course you will be fine on the car trip and visiting. How could they think any different?
Jakeand Just Harry
