Flowers to Brighten Our Days while Dogdad's Away

Yesterday was hot and humid... but that didn't keep Dogdad from being silly as we sat on the back patio. We found that Mom's favorite mussenda seems to have shaken off the winter chill. Here is one of the two blooms she decided to grace us with. Our plumbago also decided to bloom (notice H.C. Bird parked until his next adventure).

The walking iris seem to be happy too -- even though they can't go very far in their pots.
And desert rose has been quite splendid. We learned yesterday that her formal name is adenium -- and that a local attorney has been cultivating new varieties, including one that is blue.

Ah, but Dogdad is off to Birmingham for a few days to discuss the project he won last month - and his three sad admirers sat on the stairs to watch him cram all his stuff into his computer bag before he left for the airport. (Note from Mom: Jakey was getting so nervous watching the process, that I sat with him and JH on the stairs , with lots of scritches to keep them calm. Sigh.
Even sadder than we three, however, is the breaking news that the oil in the Gulf may have been picked up by what is called the Loop Current and may now be making its way down and around the Florida Keys and up the Atlantic Coast. Add irreplaceable coral reefs to the sickening damage to fish, birds, wetlands, and other God-given natural resources -- and the livelihoods of those who have worked with these resources for generations.)

We have been worrying about you guys and your waters and bays and stuff ever since this bad oil mess started. With my very poor sense of Geography, I thought it was much closer to you, so I expecetted to find you knockkkking on the door a lot of days ago already. What do I know, anyway. I am sorry I was right, if a bit premature. Good thing HC bird has a safe place on your patio.

We know you'll miss Dogdad but he'll be back soon. Sounds like he keeps quite busy.

And very sad about that oil spill and all the damage it is doing. We hope it doesn't travel to where you live. What a mess it's turned out to be! We'll be thinking of you when we watch the news tonight.

That first picture got me laughing. I took a similar one of King Toffee on Sunday but didn't put it up...pity.
Your plants are exquisite...the desert rose always reminds me of my childhood on the farm.
Yes..what a catastrophe with the oil leak in the gulf. It saddens me immensely.
Hope hubby isn't away too long.

Great pictures. Didn't realise you were so close to the scene. The thing that's really galling about this oil spill is the arrogance of the people responsible. Always seems to be someone elses fault rather than their own.

Hi Guys...it seems the oil may have reached the Gulf Stream, which means it will skip us if the seas remain calm. The bad news is it's more likely to come around the keys and up the East coast. Since we are on the shores of Tampa Bay (East side), we sometimes get tar balls(oil balls) from the tankers discharge. We are close to the shipping lane. They look like round rocks till you step on em and then they are all ooey-squishy-sticky-stinky in between yer toes. If there is an hurricane in the Gulf, all bets are off as to where the yuck will go. It is what it is, it can't be undone, so the bestest thing is for everyone to focus on stopping it and cleaning up the damage as best we can. Anybody got a tanker full of Dawn dishwashing detergent they can spare?

sniffies,

Bonnie

We are watching the oil spill. Dog Dad was telling about all the gray ash thirty years ago. The strange things you hear from your Dog Dad, all because he had a degree in rocks.

Just a little followup to your comment. The boys' behavior could very well be due to the absence of Dad - just keep trying to have their daily routine as much the same as usual as you can. And don't hesitate to use a firm deep voice with them.

I couldn't agree more with your sad last note about the oil spill. What a terrible tragedy. And, to think, BP didn't have a plan in place for this type of catastrophe. Unbelievable.

I hope that DogDad's trip is short and he is home before you know it!

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Hi there
Fingers crossed that the oil spill does not reach your precious coast. (Aberdeen is an oil town with a big BP presence so we are following the tragic events over in the Gulf of Mexico and beyond closely)
As for 'black pudding'. The name is so misleading, it's not a dessert, rather a sort of breakfast sausage whose main ingredient is pigs blood! See http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/black_pudding for more information!
Cheers, Gail.

We came over to enlighten you on the black pudding but see our little nephew has visited.
Truly it is the most disgusting concoction made with blood - a kind of blood sausage typically eaten as part of a cooked breakfast!

I know how you feel Jake. Whenever my humans take out their suitcases, I give them my most mournful look to let them know how much I will miss them.

The oil spill really is a tragedy!

The picture of your pretty desert rose makes Moma a little sad. She noticed that our Gramma lost hers during the winter freeze. We've not talked about it yet ... we know Grams is going to be upset to have that conversation. Sigh. Maybe our happy selves will help distract her. We hope so.

Slowly catching up,
