In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918) Canadian Army
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Yesterday the UK remembered all the men we have lost at war. A minutes silence was held at the
ReplyDelete11am.
A friend sent us this poem..
WHY ARE THEY SELLING POPPIES, MUMMY?
SELLING IN TOWN TODAY.
THE POPPIES,CHILD,ARE FLOWERS OF LOVE,
FOR THE MEN WHO MARCHED AWAY.
BUT WHY HAVE THEY CHOSEN A POPPY MUMMY?
WHY NOT A BEAUTIFUL ROSE?
BECAUSE MY CHILD,MEN FOUGHT AND DIED
IN THE FIELDS WHERE THE POPPIES GROW.
BUT WHY ARE THE POPPIES SO RED?MUMMY?
WHY ARE THE POPPIES SO RED?
RED IS THE COLOUR OF BLOOD, MY CHILD.
THE BLOOD THAT OUR SOLDIERS SHED.
THE HEART OF THE POPPY IS BLACK, MUMMY
WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE BLACK?
BLACK MY CHILD, IS THE SYMBOL OF GRIEF.
FOR THE MEN WHO NEVER CAME BACK
BUT WHY, MUMMY, ARE YOU CRYING SO?
YOUR TEARS ARE GIVING YOU PAIN.
MY TEARS ARE MY FEARS FOR YOU MY CHILD,
FOR THE WORLD IS FORGETTING AGAIN.

LEST WE FORGET ON THE 11DAY OF THE 11 MONTH AT THE 11 HOUR
REMEMBRANCE DAY.
Very beautiful...and what George the Lad said.
ReplyDeleteI am late, but that is such a lovely poem and how well I remember the poppies from when I lived in Canada. They don't seem to be a part of Veteran's Day, at least here in Florida. I loved to pin the poppy to my jacket or shirt and wear it all day when I was younger.
ReplyDeleteWe have many veterans in our family and some who were lost at war. My husband's birthday is also November 11 - born to a young Air Force captain in 1958. It's a special day in many ways and it's so good to see people honor it as it should be honored. Ann
That poem always makes Mom cry. A wonderful tribute to our precious veterans. :)
